Farmers Validate HoReCo’s Technical Support as Productivity Increases in Lot 4 Irrigation Schemes
Farmer representatives from the Northern Province and the City of Kigali have reviewed and validated HoReCo’s agricultural technical support to Lot 4 Irrigation Schemes under the Operation and Management of Irrigation Schemes (OMIS) Project.
The validation took place during the Q4 and Annual Performance Reports Validation Workshop held at Centre Christus, Remera, under the guidance of the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB).
Speaking at the workshop, HoReCo CEO Richard Bucyana commended farmers for their collaboration and encouraged them to apply the knowledge gained through HoReCo’s technical support to improve productivity and progressively become professional agronomists within their communities.
Highlighting the impact of this support, Maniragabo Théogène, a farmer representative from Twongere Umusaruro Cooperative in Mukinga Marshland, described HoReCo as a key partner in the cooperative’s agricultural transformation.
“Before HoReCo started working with us, we farmed without proper coordination, and our productivity was around 3.2 tonnes per hectare. Today, we are achieving 5.8 tonnes per hectare. Since our collaboration began in 2017, particularly over the past three years, HoReCo has helped us improve significantly,” he said.
He added that the cooperative aims to increase productivity to 8.8 tonnes per hectare this year, highlighting the need for continued technical guidance from HoReCo agronomists to achieve this target.
Through the RAB-funded OMIS Project, implemented by HoReCo, farmers continue to receive agricultural extension services and technical support to improve productivity, strengthen farming practices and promote sustainable irrigation scheme management.
