Conclusion of OCP School Lab Phase 1: A Milestone in Sustainable Agriculture

This past Friday 20th December, the OCP School Lab Phase 1 officially concluded in Bugesera District, marking a significant step forward in advancing sustainable agricultural practices in Rwanda. Hosted at the Rwanda Fertilizer Company (RFC) industry, the event brought together key stakeholders, including RFC senior staff, the HoReCo Chairman and CEO, HoReCo team members, local government representatives, and farmers. This collaborative gathering underscored a shared vision for empowering farmers and driving agricultural transformation.

A Unified Effort for Agricultural Growth

The OCP School Lab initiative, funded by RFC and implemented by HoReCo, has been a beacon of hope and progress for the farming community. This first phase focused on equipping farmers with essential knowledge and skills to enhance maize cultivation sustainably. By incorporating soil sampling techniques and offering targeted training, the program has addressed critical gaps in agricultural productivity, paving the way for a more resilient farming sector.

HoReCo Chairman and CEO highlighted the importance of partnerships in achieving agricultural sustainability, stating, “This initiative demonstrates what we can achieve when we unite for a common purpose. Farmers are at the heart of our mission, and programs like OCP School Lab ensure they have the tools to succeed.”

Empowering Farmers Through Knowledge

One of the program’s core activities was soil sampling, a vital step in understanding soil health and tailoring fertilizer use to specific needs. Farmers also received comprehensive training on sustainable maize cultivation techniques, empowering them to optimize yields while preserving the environment. This knowledge transfer is expected to have a long-lasting impact, fostering a culture of informed and responsible farming.

A farmer participant shared their experience, saying, “Before this program, we didn’t fully understand the importance of soil health. Now, we can see how using the right techniques and fertilizers can transform our fields. Murakoze cyane to RFC and HoReCo for this opportunity.”

Looking Ahead: A Brighter Agricultural Future

The successful completion of Phase 1 sets the stage for the next steps in the OCP School Lab initiative. With the foundation laid in Bugesera District, the program aims to expand its reach, bringing its innovative approach to more regions and farming communities. This expansion will continue to build on the momentum created, ensuring that the vision of sustainable agriculture becomes a reality across Rwanda.
