HoReCo 2024 Recap: A Year of Impact and Growth

As 2024 draws to a close, HoReCo reflects on a transformative year filled with milestones and impactful initiatives. From empowering farmers to advancing sustainable agriculture practices, our commitment to shaping Rwanda’s agricultural future has never been stronger. Here’s a detailed look back at the key highlights of 2024:

Empowering Farmers Through Training Programs

This year, HoReCo conducted a nationwide farmers’ training program, combining in-class and on-field sessions to equip farmers with essential knowledge and skills. The program covered vital topics such as Good Agricultural Practices, governance for farmers’ organizations, and irrigation infrastructure maintenance. The initiative culminated in study tours in Bugesera, Gatsibo, and Mulindi districts, where over 1,000 farmers received certificates for their achievements. These efforts have fostered a new generation of informed and empowered agricultural leaders.

Launch of the AGRA Project

In partnership with BASO, HoReCo launched an AGRA-funded project aimed at enhancing the avocado value chain in Rwanda. This initiative emphasizes youth participation, offering opportunities for the younger generation to contribute to and benefit from the agricultural sector. By focusing on avocados, a high-value crop, the project aims to boost economic growth and sustainability.

Innovations in Sustainable Farming

HoReCo’s dedication to sustainable farming was evident through various initiatives. The OCP School Lab campaign in Gatsibo district provided soil sampling, training, and sustainable maize cultivation techniques to local farmers. Additionally, moveable irrigation kits were introduced in Nyagatare and Gatsibo districts to combat rain shortages. These kits irrigated over 7 hectares daily, supporting hybrid maize cultivation across 20 hectares and ensuring food security in challenging conditions.

Campaign for a Prosperous 2025A Season

To accelerate planting activities and secure a successful harvest for the 2025A season, HoReCo spearheaded a special campaign in Rwagingo Marshland. This initiative brought together farmers, local government leaders, and agricultural partners, uniting efforts to boost productivity and prepare for a thriving future.

Staff Retreat and Community Engagement

HoReCo’s all-staff retreat in Musanze District was a highlight of 2024, blending skill development with community outreach. The retreat featured a visit to the PSPP farm in Kinigi, where staff toured the potato seed project and gained valuable insights. Giving back to the community was a core part of this event, as HoReCo supported vulnerable families in the Kinigi Sector with health insurance.

Youth Empowerment at CARE Day

At the CARE Day event held at IPRC Gishari, HoReCo empowered over 1,000 young graduates with skills and inspiration to shape Rwanda’s agricultural future. This initiative highlighted the importance of involving youth in agriculture to ensure sustainability and innovation.

Proximity Coaching Success

A Q4 workshop validated the success of HoReCo’s proximity coaching services, which have had a significant impact on farmer organizations in irrigation schemes. These coaching services have enhanced governance, productivity, and the overall resilience of agricultural communities.

Looking Ahead

As we close the chapter on 2024, HoReCo extends heartfelt gratitude to our staff, partners, and stakeholders for their unwavering support. Together, we’ve laid a strong foundation for a prosperous future. With innovative projects and community-centered initiatives, HoReCo is ready to continue transforming Rwanda’s agricultural landscape in 2025 and beyond.
