PSPP BACKGROUND

The second project implemented by HoReCo is the Potato Seed Production Project (PSPP) for developing Early Generation Seed (EGS) of Irish potato in Musanze district. This project was funded by USAID through the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), the project is supporting the Irish potato value chain. This project aims to contributing to the development of a sustainable private sector-led potato seed system in Rwanda by producing three categories of potato seeds mainly Pre-Basic, Basic and Certified Seeds.

Overall objective of the project: To contribute to improved livelihood of smallholder farming communities through ensuring quality and quantity of needed potato seeds by developing a sustainable private sector led potato seed system in Rwanda.

 

Specific objectives that the project seeks to accomplish: 

Objective 1: Produce Early Generation Seeds (EGS) and basic clean potato seed.

Objective 2: Support other private potato seed multipliers to produce adequate quality and quantity of seeds affordable by smallholder farmers through field and crop inspection.

Objective 3: Support ten potato cooperatives to establish seed units and train them on improved technologies and raise awareness of seed multipliers and companies on- seed inspection and certification.

Objective 4:  Partner with RAB to strengthen the commercialization of potato seeds in Rwanda.
