A Week of Progress: HoReCo’s Evaluation of Irrigation Schemes Across Rwanda

This past week, HoReCo embarked on a critical evaluation journey to assess the performance and impact of irrigation schemes under our management. In collaboration with the Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), our team conducted on-field assessments across multiple districts, ensuring that our projects align with the targets and indicators set in our contractual agreement.

Day 1: Kickoff in Bugesera District

The evaluation commenced in Bugesera District, where our team, alongside RAB staff, began assessing the effectiveness and sustainability of irrigation infrastructure. The goal was to measure HoReCo’s performance in delivering quality services to farmers while ensuring optimal functionality of irrigation schemes. This initial phase provided valuable insights into areas of success and aspects requiring improvement.

Day 2: Continuing the Assessment in Nyagatare District

The second day of our evaluation led us to Nyagatare District, a region vital for Rwanda’s agricultural productivity. Here, our dedicated team conducted detailed assessments of irrigation schemes, engaging with local farmers and stakeholders to gauge the effectiveness of our interventions. Measuring our progress against predefined indicators allowed us to identify key strengths and opportunities for further development.

Days 3: Evaluations in Burera and Rulindo Districts

As the week progressed, our evaluation efforts took us to Burera and Rulindo Districts. These assessments provided a comprehensive view of our irrigation projects’ impact on agricultural activities in the region. We were honored to host the Minister of Justice, Rulindo’s focal person, who joined our CEO, RAB contract managers, and HoReCo staff in reviewing the Season A 2025 cultivations. Their presence underscored the significance of our work in enhancing food security and promoting sustainable farming practices.

Final Day: Q2 Progress Report Validation for Lot 5

On the final day of our evaluation week, March 7, 2025, HoReCo participated in a workshop hosted by RAB at the Mulindi Center of Excellence in Gasabo District to validate our Q2 progress report for Lot 5. The workshop brought together RAB Heads of Department, senior staff, contract managers, HoReCo’s CEO, staff, and farmers. Discussions focused on the impact of proximity coaching in strengthening farmer organizations and enhancing irrigation scheme management. This session reaffirmed our dedication to ensuring that our initiatives effectively support sustainable agriculture and food security.

Commitment to Agricultural Sustainability

This week-long evaluation reinforced HoReCo’s unwavering dedication to ensuring the success and sustainability of Rwanda’s agricultural sector. By continuously assessing and improving our irrigation schemes, we aim to support farmers, enhance productivity, and contribute to national food security goals. Our collaborative efforts with RAB and other key stakeholders reflect our commitment to delivering impactful and long-lasting agricultural solutions.

As we move forward, HoReCo remains focused on innovation, efficiency, and excellence in irrigation management. Together, we are building a resilient agricultural sector for a more prosperous Rwanda.
